Learn about the new Medicare cards and the Medicare Beneficiary Identifiers (MBIs) during an upcoming open door forum. CMS is hosting the open door forum Wednesday, Sept. 11 from 2 to 3 p.m. EST.

Beginning Jan. 1, 2020, you will be required to use the MBI.

With a few exceptions, Medicare will reject:
  • Claims that are submitted with Health Insurance Claim Numbers (HICNs)
  • All eligibility transactions submitted with HICNs.
There are three ways agencies office can get MBIs:
  • Ask your Medicare patients for their new Medicare cards when they arrive. If they did not get a new card, provide them with the Get Your New Medicare Card flyer.
  • Sign up for the portal to use the look-up tool and search for MBIs for your patients.
  • Get the MBI from the remittance advice.
