Seniors among most vulnerable during Hurricane Harvey

As Hurricane Harvey hit Texas and the flood waters rose, vulnerable seniors were among those most in need of help.

Images of nursing home residents in Dickinson, Texas stranded in flood waters were widely circulated during the storm, CBS News reports. And an elderly couple and their daughter were rescued from the couple’s home after rising water trapped the family on an upper floor, according to CNN.

The storm struck just months before new CMS emergency preparedness Conditions of Participation take effect, emphasizing the importance of such plans for home health agencies.

The implementation date for the new standards is Nov. 15, 2017.
