Physicians spend very little time reviewing skilled home health plans of care, according to the results of a survey published in Annals of Internal Medicine.

In fact, 47% of the 1,005 responding physicians said they spent less than a minute reviewing the CMS Form 485 prior to certification, the survey results state.

About 80% of physicians “rarely or never changed an order on the CMS-485, and 78.3% rarely or never contacted SHHC clinicians with questions about information,” according to survey results.

Researchers concluded that Form 485 doesn’t meaningfully engage physicians and strategies are needed to improve communication between agencies and physicians.
