CMS to host open door forum for new Medicare cards

Learn about the new Medicare cards and the Medicare Beneficiary Identifiers (MBIs) during an upcoming open door forum. CMS is hosting the open door forum Wednesday, Sept. 11 from 2 to 3 p.m. EST.

Beginning Jan. 1, 2020, you will be required to use the MBI.

With a few exceptions, Medicare will reject:

Claims that are submitted with Health Insurance Claim Numbers (HICNs)
All eligibility transactions submitted with HICNs.

There are three ways agencies office can get MBIs:

Ask your Medicare patients for their new Medicare cards when they arrive. If they did not get a new card, provide them with the Get Your New Medicare Card flyer.
Sign up for the portal to use the look-up tool and search for MBIs for your patients.
Get the MBI from the remittance advice.
