The deadline is fast approaching for providers to comment on several new codes and revisions proposed for implementation Oct. 1, 2020.

The deadline to submit comments on the proposals is Nov. 8.

The proposed code changes were discussed at the September ICD-10 Coordination and Maintenance Committee meeting. Among the possible changes is a proposal that would allow coders the ability to capture additional detail for patients with Stage 3 chronic kidney disease (CKD) by expanding code N18.3 (Chronic kidney disease, stage 3 (moderate)) into a subcategory.

The expansion, proposed by the National Kidney Foundation and supported by both the Renal Physicians Association and the American Society of Nephrology would involve the addition of new codes at N18.3 to include:
  • N18.30 (Chronic kidney disease, stage 3 unspecified)
  • N18.31 (Chronic kidney disease, stage 3a)
  • N18.32 (Chronic kidney disease, stage 3b)
