CMS to implement multi-factor authentication process for provider enrollment systems

CMS will begin using a multi-factor authentication process for those who use their provider enrollment systems.

Multi-factor authentication is an added layer of security that helps prevent anyone other than the user from logging into an account. CMS says they are implementing this feature to improve identification and authentication security.

The following timeline for implementation of multi-factor authentication to the enrollment systems has been established:

Identity & Access Management System — September 9, 2019
NPPES — December 2019
PECOS — April 2020
