UPDATE, 4/14/2022: NGS has updated providers with a notice that the issues continue with U537F and there is no workaround at this time. More info: https://homehealthline.decisionhealth.com/Articles/Detail.aspx?id=544627&featured=1

Some providers are getting the green light to resubmit NOAs beginning April 4, 2022, for RTPs with reason code U537F that were returned due to a system error.

National Government Services (NGS), a Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC) working with agencies in 19 states, announced the fix March 31, 2022, after first identifying the issue January 19, 2022.

Effective Monday, April 4, providers in NGS states “can resubmit any HH NOAs (32A) that have returned to provider incorrectly and are advised to bill the KX modifier on the final HH claim, as well as add remarks to request an exception to the late-filing penalty. These remarks can be similar to ‘RAP was late due to System Problem – CWF CR 35441.’”

U537F was assigning incorrectly on some NOAs due to the Common Working File not correctly recognizing discharges. The CWF maintainer developed a fix for the issue, NGS noted in its urgent alert to providers.

The MAC stresses that U537F will assign correctly on duplicate NOAs for the same admission period or if the there is another provider listed as primary on the prior home health episode in the CWF.

“Providers are advised to routinely verify billing before submitting a new NOA for a beneficiary admission,” NGS notes.
