CMS released an updated version of the Home Health Grouper to account for the code changes set to take effect on April 1, 2023.

Among these changes are the addition of new codes under category Y07 in order to better align verbiage related to critical perpetrator of abuse external cause codes with that of current CDC core data collection elements and literature related to patient maltreatment and neglect — including elder abuse.

For example, Y07.010 (Husband, current, perpetrator of maltreatment, and neglect) and Y07.011 (Husband, former, perpetrator of maltreatment, and neglect).

None of the new codes were added to the list of acceptable primary diagnoses and do not fall into any clinical groupings, according to the latest HH Grouper update.

Three codes also received a clinical group reassignment and will no longer be acceptable primary diagnoses. These codes are:
  • M50.00 (Cervical disc disorder with myelopathy, unspecified cervical region)
  • S06.33AA (Contusion and laceration of cerebrum, unspecified, with loss of consciousness status unknown, initial encounter)
  • S0636AA (Traumatic hemorrhage of cerebrum, unspecified, with loss of consciousness status unknown, initial encounter)

Other notable changes

Effective April 1:
  • The description of code Z59.87 will change from “Material hardship” to “Material hardship due to limited financial resources, NEC.”
