Home care workers in Nevada are participating in what is being called one of the largest organizing drives in recent history, according to SEIU Local 1107.
They note that more than 1,000 home care workers have voted or are taking part in union elections at multiple employers. Hundreds more workers will be heading toward elections in coming months, according to the union.
"I care for a wonderful woman in her 80s and every day she tells me how much she needs and appreciates me," said Debra Loving, a Las Vegas home care worker who recently voted to join the union. "Despite my 20 years of experience and dedication, I only get paid $11.50 an hour, I have to rely on Medicaid for my healthcare, and don't have any paid time off.”
