CMS revoked 122 hospices’ Medicare enrollment between July 2023 and June 2025, according to a fact sheet that CMS released in July.
The agencies were among 688 that were subject to medical review under CMS’ Provisional Period of Enhanced Oversight (PPEO) program, which evaluates hospices that recently enrolled in Medicare or changed ownership in Arizona, California, Nevada or Texas.
CMS implemented PPEO in an effort to address fraud in the hospice sphere, including targeting long lengths of stays, co-located hospices and high rates of beneficiaries discharged alive.
Other efforts that CMS has taken to address hospice fraud include conducting nationwide site visits to high-risk hospices, streamlining the beneficiary disenrollment process and enacting a rapid response team that works to resolve enrollment complaints.
