The HHS Office of the Inspector General (OIG) says the state of Texas should collect $10.5 million it overpaid for hospice care from October 2020 through October 2022.

OIG has been analyzing data from states where hospice services are covered by Medicaid to determine potential payments over the hospice cap.

In a new report Sept. 22, 2025, the OIG says Texas overpaid 174 hospices because it didn’t have a policy related to calculating and collecting overpayments.

The OIG recommended Texas collect the overpayments and develop policies to address the issue in the future.
