HHS has announced that as of July 1, 2012, there are 89 new accountable care organizations (ACO) serving 1.2 million Medicare beneficiaries.

According to HHS, ACO initiatives could save $940 million in federal dollars over four years, while providing high-quality, coordinated care.

To date, over 150 ACOs with 2.4 million beneficiaries are enrolled in the Medicare shared savings initiatives.
