Home health company Amedisys today announced a new deal with insurer Humana to serve plan patients on a per-visit basis.

Under a previous deal, Humana had paid Amedisys per episode. The deal’s scope is significantly smaller than that of the companies’ previous deal. In fact, the new deal would cut Amedisys’ annual Humana revenue of $65 to $70 million in half, according to a press release published Oct. 15.

The announcement immediately made itself felt in the market, where Amedisys stock dropped 9% when news of the deal emerged yesterday, according to Marketwatch.

The smaller scope of the new deal may open up opportunities for other home health providers interested in serving Humana patients.
