The Supreme Court’s decision June 25 to allow individuals buying insurance through an exchange, regardless of the state they live in, and remain eligible, with income restrictions, for tax credits will ensure home and personal care aides nationwide will continue to have access to health coverage through the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

It also means that the employer mandate in the 34 states depending on the federal marketplaces for employers doing business in one of several of those states will continue unimpeded for now, according to a report by PRNewswire. Still, litigation surrounding the ACA and the employer mandate remains, including a suit brought by the U.S. House of Representatives against the President in federal court that claims the delay of the employer mandate was an abuse of executive power.

Val Halamandaris, president of the National Association for Home Care & Hospice, was pleased with the 6-3 ruling. The decision prevented "wholesale chaos for the health care system with people across the country being denied their benefits," he said in a news release.
