An issue with National Provider Identifiers (NPIs), which caused home health agencies and hospices nationwide to have problems submitting claims, appeared to be resolved but may have reappeared.

The issue involves NPIs “falling off the crosswalk, which is causing home health billing requests for anticipated payment (RAPs) and claims and hospice Notices of Election (NOEs) and claims to go to the provider’s Return to Provider (RTP) file,” Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC) CGS said in a release earlier this month.

CMS alerted the National Association for Home Care & Hospice (NAHC) on Oct. 14 that the issue had been addressed and that NOEs and RAPs should be processing normally, according to NAHC. At the time, NAHC said it appeared that a small number of providers were affected and, while the issue was ongoing, had difficulty processing any claims.

But NAHC says that on Oct. 20, it received word from a provider whose MAC is Palmetto GBA that the problem "appears to have reemerged."
