Noridian Healthcare Solutions, LLC — CMS’ new Supplemental Medical Review Contractor (SMRC) — has announced it is conducting post-payment reviews of claims for general inpatient (GIP) hospice care.

Noridian’s review is for care billed on dates of service from Jan. 1, 2017, through Dec. 31, 2017.

The announcement comes in the wake of a HHS Office of Inspector General report indicating hospices often improperly bill for GIP care.

Note that when StrategicHealthSolutions was a SMRC, it announced in 2017 that it would conduct post-payment reviews of certain 2015 claims to see whether hospices billed for GIP care inappropriately.

At the time, StrategicHealthSolutions said it would examine no more than 40 records or claims per provider for 65 hospices nationwide.
Results of that analysis aren’t immediately available.
