CMS and the American Medication Association (AMA) are developing new codes to capture the COVID-19 vaccines and administration in anticipation of the upcoming availability of the vaccine(s), according to a news release from CMS.

The release goes on to state that most of these codes are not currently effective and not all codes will be used.

CMS will issue specific code descriptors in the future and effective dates for the codes for Medicare purposes will coincide with the date of the FDA’s emergency use authorization or approval, according to the release.

In preparation for the vaccine administration claims, the PC-ACE software has been updated and is ready for providers to download.
