Following the FDA’s recent action that authorized a booster dose of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for certain high-risk populations and a recommendation from the CDC, CMS will continue to provide coverage for this critical protection from the virus, including booster doses, without cost sharing, according to a news release Sept. 24.

The CDC recommends that people aged 65 years and older, along with other at-risk groups, should receive a booster shot of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine at least 6 months after completing their Pfizer primary series.

It’s not clear when booster or additional shots will be approved for Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccine recipients. Due to temperature requirements for the Pfizer shots, the other two vaccines have been easier for home health providers to store and distribute.
