New guidance to state surveyors has brought an end to the COVID-19 Focused Infection Control (FIC) Survey Tool.

In a message to state survey directors Sept. 26, 2022, “Surveyors must no longer use the FIC survey and tool” on a case-by-case basis. Surveyors were instructed in February to end the national use of the FIC survey, but could continue use on a case-by-case basis.

CMS also noted in the updated guidance that providers should no longer use the tool for voluntary self-assessments of their ability to meet infection prevention and control priorities.

“Facilities should continue to adhere to basic infection prevention and control principles for COVID-19 that are consistent with national standards of practice,” CMS notes in the update.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recently updated its guidance, as well, with changes in requirements around personal protective equipment, testing and post-exposure recommendations.
