The California Department of Justice (DOJ) has launched a new hospice fraud initiative, according to a news release published on Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2025.

The campaign aims to educate the public, including hospice patients, their families, health care providers and law enforcement, on how to identify and report suspected fraud.

“Our message is simple: Hospice care should be about compassion, not corruption,” noted California Attorney General Rob Bonta in the state’s release. “This initiative builds on our ongoing efforts to protect patients and families and arm them with the knowledge they need to recognize and report fraudulent behavior.”

The California DOJ plans to take several steps to inform the public, including publishing materials like public service announcements, billboards and radio ads that provide key information about recognizing fraudulent practices. The initiative also includes community forums led by experts from the California Department of Justice Division of Medi-Cal Fraud & Elder Abuse.

Finally, California officials also introduced a helpline and web portal where individuals can report suspected fraud and access key resources and guides for hospice patients and their caregivers.
