Home health providers are unable to use most telehealth visits to meet CMS’ face-to-face encounter requirements, but physicians will still have the capability to get paid for these visits under some Medicare Advantage plans.

Home health providers could previously leverage a physician’s telehealth visit to certify a Medicare patient. But the waiver allowing traditional Medicare patients to connect to a telehealth visit from their home expired on Oct. 1, 2025.

While this limitation applies to traditional Medicare patients, Medicare Advantage plans have always had the capability to allow additional services like telehealth.

United Healthcare will continue to offer telehealth coverage for in-home services provided by in-network physicians, mental health practitioners and non-physician practitioners like PAs and NPs, according to an Oct. 6, 2025, memo. Both audio and audio-video visits are eligible for reimbursement, so long as the provider uses a service listed on CMS’ approved Medicare Telehealth List.

United Healthcare plans to continue telehealth coverage through 2026.
