A new memo for state surveyors highlights several areas where they’re best-positioned to identify and report fraud during hospice provider surveys.

“While the primary purpose of CMS’ health and safety surveys is to determine compliance with the Medicare Hospice CoPs, there are several elements of the survey process that can uncover concerns that may necessitate a referral to CMS for potential fraud,” CMS states.

CMS goes on to note that it is important that all elements of the survey process, and especially those listed in the memo, be consistently performed to safeguard hospice patients and ensure the integrity of Medicare funding for hospice care.

The memo highlights in-home observations, as well as staff and patient interviews and record reviews.
