CMS has introduced the Hospice Care Index (HCI) as a new proposed measure for the Hospice Quality Reporting Program.

The HCI is intended to strengthen our quality reporting program, while also providing families and patients the information they need to decide which hospice is right for them, CMS stated in an email announcing the addition.

The HCI considers 10 claims-based indicators including weekend visits, per-beneficiary spending, and the number of visits near death.
